KERAMBA FISH, THE NEWLY CONSIDERED POTENTIAL
Sergai Regency has the fishery and the marine potentials including the catching fishery, the conserved fishery, the public waters, and the region extension covering five Districts of Pantai Cermin, Perbaungan, Teluk Mengkudu, Tanjung Beringin, and Bandar Khalifah. Nowadays, the government has built the facilities of the conservation fishery (Seed Fish Board), especially the fresh water conservation. The potential of the fresh water conserved fishery is great enough consisting of the 6.908 hectares fresh water pond, 525 units of keramba, the fast current river and the fish conservation in a 12.350 hectare rice field, a 75 hectare seeding, the yard pond, and the fishing pond of 744 hectares. While the public water potential consists of a 45 hectare dam, a 795 hectare river, 215 hectare marshes and irrigational canal. The sea fishery potential is still promising considering the production quantity is smaller than the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY).
There are also some other expandable potentials of brackish water fishery, fresh water fishery, etc. keramba, one of the expandable fishery potentials is the fish conservation in the floating net of keramba. Sutrisno, one of the keramba fish farmer on the course of Ular river, Pantai Cermin District, said that he bought a 2x4 meter square keramba for 1,3 million rupiahs. It is capable to contain the gold fish of 5-6 cm. He also said that he had had 6 units of keramba, and when calculated, the seed fish out counted up to 9.000. The head of the Fishery and Sea Department, Ir. Ramlan Matondang, Msi, said that the rivers in Sergai had the potential as the area of the fresh water fishery conservation through keramba. However, only a few rivers have been taken benefit of so far. The fish cultivated are among others the gold fish, Nila, and Mujair. At least five rivers, Ular river, Buaya river, Padang river, Bohilang river, and Batu Nongol river have the potential for the conservation of the fresh water fishery. Beside, in Pantai Cermin District, keramba fish breeding using Sei Ular irrigation is commonly found in Perbaungan District. This conservation gave a good result. It needs a great concern from many parts to conserve the breeding fish without destructing the environment. Breeding fish in keramba is considered practical and economical enough. This kind of fish grows fast as long as it is fed regularly in its appropriate measure. The breeding fish conservation does not have any impact on the river flow since it is well arranged and situated on the river banks. The conservation merely uses the river flow.
